GTA 6 Ultimate Edition: What's Actually Locked (Full List)
Short version: the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition locks five cosmetic shops and two side missions behind a $20 upgrade over the $80 Standard Edition. That is the entire list. And here is the part that got buried under the outrage: you can upgrade later, so Standard buyers are not locked out for good.
The two editions
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026. Standard is $79.99. Ultimate is $99.99 — a $20 difference. Both are the same game: same map, same story, same Jason and Lucia. Ultimate just adds extra content on top. It is not a cut-down game, and it is not nothing either — there are seven exclusive items. Here is every one.
The five shops (all cosmetic)
The five shops locked to Ultimate:
- One-Eyed Willie's and Rideout Customs — car mod shops
- Stock 305 — clothing store
- Sara's Unisex Salon — hair salon
- Electric Fang Tattoo — tattoo parlor
The word that matters is cosmetic. Every one of these is about how you and your car look. None of them touches the story, the map, or a mission in the main game. The real gripe is that shops are physical places on the map, so Standard players might see storefronts they cannot enter at launch — fair enough. But a locked cosmetic store is not a worse game.
The two side missions
Two exclusive side missions:
- A raid on a Southside Vice City gang compound — get in, grab contraband and special items, get out.
- Classic Car Collection — a commission from a local fixer named Wyman to track down abandoned classic and project cars across Leonida and restore them.
Context the outrage skips: GTA games ship with dozens of side missions. Two behind an upgrade is a small slice by volume. The fair counterpoint: story content behind a paywall in a single-player game bothers a lot of longtime fans on principle, and that is legitimate. Both are true — minor by volume, worth disliking on principle. What it is not: a hidden second campaign.
The detail that changes everything: you can upgrade later
This should have been the headline. Rockstar confirmed you can upgrade from Standard to Ultimate after launch, as a separate purchase. So nobody is locked out forever. Buy Standard, play the whole game, and if you later decide you want the shops and missions, buy the upgrade then. The "locked behind a paywall forever" framing simply is not accurate on the core question of access.
What is not confirmed yet: the exact upgrade price after launch, and refund terms. Rockstar has not published those. We will say "unknown" rather than guess — and update this page and the Scorecard the moment they are official.
What it means for you
- Completionist who wants everything on day one? Get Ultimate now — $20 against hundreds of hours is nothing.
- Everyone else, which is most people? Buy Standard. You get the complete game, and since you can upgrade later, waiting costs you nothing. Decide once you are actually playing.
One more heads-up: the launch physical edition reportedly ships as a box with a download code, not a disc, with a disc version reported for around December. That is reported, not officially dated by Rockstar — see our physical-edition breakdown.
What would change this answer
Official upgrade pricing or refund terms, or any change to the edition contents. When it happens, it goes on the Scorecard.
