How Many GB Is GTA 6? Storage You'll Need (2026 Estimates)

· Sources checked · Rumors labeled

Rockstar has not officially confirmed how many gigabytes GTA 6 will take up, so anyone quoting you an exact number right now is guessing. The most credible estimates put it around 150–200GB at launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and the smart move is to free up at least 200GB to be safe once you factor in a day-one patch. Here's what's actually known versus what's floating around.

What's confirmed

Not much on the storage front, and that's the honest answer:

  • Rockstar has not published an official install size as of July 2026.
  • What we do know: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Physical copies come with a download code, not a playable disc — so even if you buy the boxed version, you download the full game and need the free space for it.

Rockstar usually reveals official storage specs about four to eight weeks before launch, so expect a real number around September–October 2026. Until then, everything below is an estimate.

What's reported (estimates only)

Based on industry estimates and GTA 6's scale, gaming press broadly lands on:

  • Roughly 150–200GB for the base install on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
  • A day-one patch of around 30–50GB on top, for a realistic combined footprint of about 200–250GB.
  • Xbox Series S: a trimmed install of roughly 110–140GB, reportedly through lower-resolution textures and download-on-demand language packs to fit the smaller drive.

For context, GTA 5 grew to around 90–120GB with its updates over the years, and GTA 6 is a far bigger, more detailed world — so a launch size well above that is a reasonable expectation, not a wild one. These are estimates. Label them as such if you see them repeated elsewhere.

What's rumor — and what's fake

  • A screenshot claiming "Xbox confirmed GTA 6 is 676.7GB" is fake and has been debunked. The giveaway: it lists Xbox One compatibility, and GTA 6 is a current-gen-only title. It also reuses a generic store image. Don't trust it.
  • An older 2024 leak suggested the file could be "just under 200GB." That's an unverified rumor, not an official figure — though it happens to sit inside the estimate range above.

What it means for you

  • Free up at least 200GB. If you clear that much now, you're almost certainly covered for the install plus the day-one patch.
  • On a 1TB PS5 or Series X, GTA 6 should fit with room to spare once you tidy up other games (usable space is roughly 800GB after the system takes its share).
  • On an Xbox Series S (only about 360GB usable), it'll eat a big chunk of your drive — you may need to uninstall other titles.
  • A fast SSD matters for load times and streaming a world this size. If you're eyeing an expansion drive, we keep current picks on our gear page.

What would change this answer

  • Rockstar publishing the official install size (expected ~4–8 weeks before launch).
  • Retailer or store-page listings revealing a confirmed download size.
  • The final day-one patch size, which can push the total up.

We track claims like this and update the moment Rockstar confirms a real number — see our Scorecard.
